More water shortages in areas near Fiji capital

10:01 am on 3 April 2006

Tens of thousands of people living close to Fiji's capital Suva were without water again at the weekend as supplies dried up without warning.

Those worst affected were people in the heavily populated Suva-Nausori corridor and in Lami and Delainavesi to the west.

The water supplies were cut after the failure of critical pumps.

The Fiji Sun quotes a senior water supply engineer, David Grinter, as saying engineers expect to complete repair works by mid day and water supply to normalise by tonight.

The same areas have had chronic water supply problems going back many years.
