A post mortem is underway today for the 23-year-old man who was shot dead in Mount Roskill on Thursday evening.
Two offenders are still on the run after what police believe was a targeted attack.
One man was shot dead and two other men are in hospital with serious injuries.
More than 20 police staff are working on the homicide investigation today, which includes a scene examination and local area canvas.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said despite it being a holiday, the investigation team was committed to identifying the culprits and understand what happened.
"It's Christmas Day and a family is grieving, and a community is distressed because of what has happened in their neighbourhood."
Meanwhile, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has raised the issue of the city's gun violence with Police Minister Poto Williams.
Goff said the number of gun crimes in the region was undermining its residents' right to feel safe.
Williams has told him police had put more officers on the street, as well as those targeting organised crime, Goff said.
He said he fully supported the tighter gun controls implemented recently, and cracking down on irresponsible owners.
