The unspoken message to Labour voters that they should switch their vote to Mr Peters in Northland has stripped the Government of its majority.

Labour leader Andrew Little told Morning Report no deal had been done with New Zealand First, and Labour only changed its strategy when it became clear its candidate was going to come a distant third.

"I spoke to Winston Peters on Saturday afternoon to wish him all the best for the evening, he clearly pulled through and we agreed that we would try to meet sometime this week and that'll be the first time I've met him for many many weeks."

Andrew Little said it was his job to make the opposition parties as cohesive as possible, so the Government had to negotiate changes rather than ram them through Parliament.
