Police officer charged with murder in Solomon Islands

15:33 pm on 11 March 2003

A 35 year old police sergeant in Solomon Islands has now been charged with the murder of Sir Frederick Soaki in Auki last month.

Sir Fred, who was a member of the National Peace Council, was gunned down at a restaurant in the Malaitan provincial capital as he was about to take part in workshops on the demobilisation of special constables.

Police have named the murder suspect as Sergeant Edmund Sae.

He was a member of the regular force.

They say they still do not know whether the assassination was connected to the demobilisation or whether the suspect was working on his own.

Enquiries are continuing.
