Building red tape being cut

22:01 pm on 5 March 2010

Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson says a guide to building affordable houses being launched in Manukau City on Friday will help low income Pacific Island and Maori families to buy a home.

Mr Williamson says the house being launched costs $168,000, excluding land, and is great for low income Pacific Island and Maori communities.

He says thousands of dollars can be cut from the consent process if architects, designers and builders keep to the framework, which aims to remove red tape.

Mr Williamson says the blueprint allows a plan to be submitted to his department. If the design is approved, it can be built without being subjected to further consents by local councils.

He says removing the cost of consents is a big step in helping Maori and Pacific Island communities get into their own homes.
