Cook Islands government delays parliament another month

11:11 am on 4 June 2002

The Cook Islands Government says a planned resumption of Parliament later this month has been delayed to give ministries more time to prepare their Budgets.

The Leader of the House, Tupou Faireka, says travel plans by some MPs was another reason to defer the sitting until late July.

"We the caucus in cabinet feel that we should give enough time for the head of ministries to bid for their budgets and give them a fair go with the bidding bodies and also the ministers so cabinet and caucus decided to refix the date for parliament to sit on the 29th of July"

Parliament has met for just 21 days in the past 18 months.

It was adjourned early in May.
