Tauranga police say they don't know the identity of a man who was killed after he was hit by a train at Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
Police say the accident occurred on Maunganui Road on a straight stretch of track at about 12.30pm.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross says that witness accounts suggest that the man stepped in front of the train without looking.
The man is described as a European in his 60's or 70's, wearing a white faced Seiko analogue watch, and a cap.
Police are looking for help in identifying the man and for any more witnesses.
