At 11am today, New Zealanders will be treated to a whole extra second.
Today will be the first time since 1997 that a leap-second was added on a working day and some worry it might cause havoc on the financial markets, cause flight delays or crash websites.
It’ll probably all be fine. Remember Y2K?
In the United States the extra second happens at midnight, but given our advantageous position on the globe, New Zealand we get it today meaning 11:59:59 will turn into 11:59:60, giving us all an extra second to play with.
With 86,401 seconds in your day instead of 86,400, here are some suggestions of what you could do with all that extra time:
- Block a mean Twitter user
- Take a deep breath
- Make 1/120 of a pack of noodles
- Swipe right
- Close one of the 100 tabs you have open in your browser
- Watch a one second clip curated by John Oliver
- Take a really short break
- Click “attending” on a Facebook event that you’re definitely not planning to go to
- Briefly regret signing up to do Dry July
- Pat a cat
- Email HR to remind them to add the extra second to your payslip
- High-five your workmate
- Think about Beyoncé
- Drool over the idea of a deep fried Big Mac especially if you’ve just finished Junk Free June
- Realise you’ve spent too much time reading this list and wasted your second
