UN again raises concerns over PNG death penalty plan

The United Nations has reiterated its plea for Papua New Guinea not to go ahead with capital punishment.

PNG is now deliberating what method of killing it will employ, after deciding against lethal injection because of restrictions on it accessing the drugs needed.

Last Friday was World Day Against the Death Penalty and the UN's resident co-ordinator in PNG, Roy Trivedy, said he accepts the government wants to address serious crime but he says the death penalty is not the remedy.

He says it would be better to properly resource police, both in personnel and equipment, so they can achieve consistent and effective law and order.
