Auckland mayor Len Brown is to face councillors at a closed-door meeting to discuss his failure to declare nearly $40,000 of free and upgraded hotel rooms.
This morning's meeting will be the councillors' first chance to question Brown about an auditors' report sparked by the mayor's two year extra-marital affair.
The report by auditors Ernst & Young found that he had accepted nine complimentary rooms and 64 upgrades, including three free rooms at SkyCity – none of which were declared as gifts as required. Some are demanding the independent mayoral office becomes more accountable to the council, with one saying he should foot part of the $100,000 cost of the audit.
Brown has said he will not resign following the review, which found he breached the council's code of conduct. There are no specified penalties for breaching the code.
