The number of consents for new homes in Auckland hit a record of close to 14,000 in the year to February.
The Auckland Council said that's up 25 percent for the same period the previous year.
Mayor Phil Goff said an average of 1150 consents were being issued every month.
He said Auckland was in the middle of a building boom and the council wanted to increase the speed it issues consents.
But to do that, Mr Goff said more staff were needed on the consenting team.
He said more than 150 new staff have been brought in over the last year, but competition with the private sector meant they have trouble filling vacancies.
