10 jailbreaks an improvement: PNG prisons

12:21 pm on 15 December 2014

There has been a marked reduction in the number of escapes from Papua New Guinea's major jails.

The Post Courier newspaper reports the country's largest jail in Buimo, Morobe Province has had only 10 prison breaks this year compared to 44 last year.

The paper reports this has been put down to the construction of new high security fences at four of the country's major jails including Bomana prison in Port Moresby.

The Correctional Services Director for the Southern regional command, Henry Wavik, officiated at the opening of the new perimeter fence for Buimo jail last week saying escapes from Bomana jail in Port Moresby are also down to only four this year.
