Opposition calls on Fiji PM to explain Chinese repatriations

Fij's opposition says the government should disclose the full facts surrounding a mass deportation of suspected scammers from Fiji to China.

China published pictures at the weekend of people wearing hoods being herded off a chartered flight by Chinese police last week.

The Fiji government has so far not commented although it promised to make statement later in the week.

The leader of the opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa said the government's been withholding vital information from the public when safety and security is at stake.

"This is creating not only unease at our safety but exposing our country to the danger of becoming a safe haven for mischief makers," said Ro Teimumu.

The leader of the National Federation Party Biman Prasad said the prime minister Frank Bainimarama had a responsibility to inform the people of Fiji what happened.

"We need to know whether there were any dual citizens holding Fiji passports, what were the human rights issues involved, how long has this manner of transnational crime been operating," Mr Prasad said.

"The government needs to be transparent and accountable with this issue because it involves Fiji's border security, domestic security as well as the immigration policies that this government has put in place."
