A Canadian tourist has been convicted of careless driving causing death or injury after a woman who was riding in the car was killed last week.

Glen Hamilton was heading west-bound on State Highway 2 when his car collided with a north-bound truck and trailer near Maramarua in Waikato, killing front seat passenger 46-year-old Catherine Clarke.

Hamilton was taken to hospital with moderate injuries. The truck driver was unhurt.

He was discharged and disqualified from driving for six months when he appeared in Thames District Court on Monday.
