Niue's new police chief, Senior Sergeant Ross Ardern, says he aims to make sure that the island's police force as good as any other in the Pacific.

Mr Adern is a New Zealander and he takes up the two year posting in July.

He says he is confident of making progress on the ground because of the support now available from New Zealand:

"With the new contractual arrangements between New Zealand and Niue, resources are that are going to be there for me, there are fall backs on my own contacts within the New Zealand Police. .I've been part of this organisation for a very long time, so all of that will be available to me."
