Wānaka residents are being asked to urgently conserve water while the town's water treatment plant is without power.

Queenstown Lakes District Council made the request this afternoon because of a power outage at the Beacon Point treatment plant.

In a statement, the council said a back-up generator at the plant failed during a planned power outage.

It said crews are working to get it back online as soon as possible.

Further updates would be posted to its Facebook page.
