Lawyers to comply with new legal order while denying regime any recognition

15:32 pm on 4 June 2009

The President of the Fiji Law Society says he believes most lawyers in Fiji will apply for new practising certificates by mid June.

Under the new Legal Practitioners Decree, the issuing of practising certificates will be transferred from the law society to the Chief Registrar.

All lawyers will also have to apply for new certificates if they want to continue to practice law.

Dorsami Naidu says whatever regime is in power, lawyers have a job to provide legal services to the public

"Maybe a lot of people will be aggrieved by the decrees, by the regime as well, and somebody's got to defend people to represent people. So we do not acquiesce to accept them. We do not recognise this regime. But I think lawyers are duty bound to represent clients."

Dorsami Naidu says he does not believe lawyers who comply with the rules can be legally refused certificates under the new decree.
