Arrest after shooting in Rotorua

19:58 pm on 1 September 2019

Police have arrested one person after officers were shot at on Te Ngae Road, in the Rotorua suburb of Ōwhata.

Police were following a suspected stolen vehicle at about 5.35pm when an occupant got out of the vehicle and fired at them, hitting the patrol car.

During the exchange a bystander received moderate injuries.

The suspect then threatened a person and took their vehicle.

Further down Te Ngae Road, he stopped at an address, where he took a second vehicle.

That vehicle was followed by police and was spiked, coming to a stop on State Highway 30 near Okatina Road.

The suspect has been taken into custody and a firearm recovered.
