The only doctor on Manu'a in American Samoa says he felt he wasn't getting the support he needed from the Department of Health and that prompted his resignation last month.

Dr Malouamaua Tuiolosega has been the physician for the Manu'a islands since 2009, and was permanently stationed there by the Department.

Dr Tuiolosega told KHJ News he resigned to set up a non-profit-organisation to deliver health care for Manu'a.

He says he believes Manu'a Health System Incorporated will be more effective in taking care of the health needs of the people of there.

He says he has been working with outside hospitals and organisations to acquire equipment and supplies for the dispensaries in Manu'a.
