Fire and Emergency said seven crews and four helicopters had battled the blaze after first receiving calls about 3pm this afternoon.

The fire caused the closure of Rawene Road, the access route to the ferry between Rawene and the historic Kohukohu village in Hokianga.

The Far North is experiencing high volumes of domestic visitors this year.
