Two young men are to face charges of dangerous driving after being caught racing at speeds of up to 200km/h on State Highway 50 in Hawke's Bay.

The drivers, aged 17 and 20 years, were racing near Maraekakaho at what the police describe as "ridiculously high" speeds.

Police say one pulled over after being pursued, but the other carried on and was later arrested at his home.

They will have their cars confiscated for 28 days under the so-called "boy racer" legislation introduced five years ago, which gives police power to empound cars.
