Dobbin's selection was announced at a ceremony at the athletes' village in Sochi on Wednesday where he was presented with a Maori cloak and the traditional pounamu pendant worn by the flag bearer.

The New Zealand team's chef de mission, Pete Wardell, says Dobbin is a world-class athlete, a wonderful role model and an inspiration.

The 34-year-old is a former inline skating world champion. He says his selection is a great honour and is determined to make his team and his country proud.

The Opening Ceremony is on Friday night (local time).
