The policeman who was attacked after stopping a car in Dunedin on Saturday night has been released from hospital.
The 40-year-old officer was talking to the female driver of the car, when a male passenger struck him on the back of the head, and he fell to the ground unconscious.
The attacker continued to hit him until another passenger intervened.
The incident occurred at 11.44pm at the intersection of North Road and Allen Street, in North East Valley, Dunedin.
The officer was treated for concussion, bleeding and bruising in hospital, but is now resting at home.
Dunedin police area commander, Inspector Dave Campbell, says they are still looking for a Dunedin man in relation to the attack.
He says the 21-year-old is evading police but that it is only a matter of time before he's caught.
In December, Senior Constable Bruce Mellor was seriously injured when he was attacked with a machete after stopping a car near Taihape. He was also working alone.
The attack reignited the debate over whether officers should wear weapons.
