Cloud-seeding experiments seek funding support

07:09 am on 16 February 2011

Promoters of a cloud-seeding proposal in Waikato will meet Beef and Lamb New Zealand in Wellington on Wednesday as they continue their quest for funding.

They want to carry out experiments later this year to test the feasibility of seeding clouds with dry ice to increase rainfall in the region during extended dry periods, following droughts in the past four years.

Federated Farmers Waikato President Stew Wadey, who is fronting the project, says dairy industry levy body Dairy NZ has agreed to consider a funding application.

He says he wants to find out if Beef and Lamb is open to the idea of contributing as well.

Mr Wadey puts the estimated cost of cloud-seeding experiments in the low thousands of dollars.

He says if the Waikato experiments go ahead and are successful, he would go back to the Minister of Agriculture seeking support for a national effort.
