The U-17 New Zealand women's footballers make more history, beating Canada 2-1 to come third at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay. Follow live updates with Matt Richens.
Welcome to RNZ's live blog of the 2018 Under 17 Women's Football World Cup third place playoff between New Zealand and Canada. New Zealand fell just short of reaching the final of this year's tournament following their 2-0 loss to European champions Spain in the semi finals on Thursday. The team have already created history by becoming the first New Zealand side to reach the final four of a Football World Cup, but they could create further history by finishing on the podium in Uruguay if they can overcome an equally as determined Canadian side that has also enjoyed a stellar performance at this year's event. New Zealand have won three matches and lost two so far in the tournament. Canada also have won three and lost two, including their 1-0 semi final loss to Mexico. Canada has also played finalists Spain - where they lost 5-0 to them in their pool match.
