Meridian ordered to remove turbines in Wellington

12:12 pm on 16 August 2011

The Environment Court has ordered Meridian Energy to remove five wind turbines from a proposed wind farm near Wellington.

Mill Creek was originally planned as a 31-turbine wind farm in Ohariu Valley. It was granted consent by Wellington and Porirua City Councils in 2009.

The Ohariu Preservation Society appealed that decision in the Environment Court.

The court has ruled the farm can go ahead, but without five turbines close to houses.

The preservation society says it is disappointed the court did not remove all the turbines and may appeal the decision if it has legal grounds to do so.

It believes noise from the turbines has the potential to cause health problems for people.

Meridian Energy says it is reviewing the ruling.
