Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was found dead in Grafton yesterday.
Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid said the driver of a dark Mazda called 111 after it stopped on Parkfield Terrace.
Police arrived and tried to assist a man who was believed to have been in the car with three others, but he died.
Schmid said gunshots were fired during an altercation believed to have taken place between the occupants of the car and another vehicle on St Johns Road.
He said a large amount of CCTV footage was being examined, and those involved in the altercation were known to each other.
"While this may have been concerning for residents in these areas, police are working hard to hold those involved to account.
"Police believe there will be people in the community who will have information which would assist the investigation and we urge them to contact us."
A post-mortem examination was due to take place today. The man who died was yet to be formally identified, Schmid said.
Police asked for information from anyone who saw the Mazda in the St Johns and Glen Innes areas between 5.30am and 6.30am yesterday.
