In a statement, the ministry said seven previously reported cases had recovered, which brought active cases to 23. Total confirmed cases was at 2257.

No new cases were identified in the community, the ministry said.

Two of the new cases today arrived from Pakistan - via Qatar and UAE - with one testing positive on arrival and the other on day five of their stay as a contact of another case. The third person arrived from a yet-to-be-determined location and tested positive on day three of their stay.

The ministry said the two cases today who flew from Pakistan arrived in New Zealand before the restriction on travel from Pakistan took effect. The restriction came into effect yesterday.

Since 1 January 2021, there have been 49 historical cases, out of a total of 441 cases.

Laboraties processed 5304 tests yesterday, bringing the seven-day rolling average to 3654.

Two new cases were reported by the ministry yesterday, at a briefing by Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall and Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.

They also said vaccinations were continuing as planned, although it later emerged some regions were falling behind - Northland in particular.
