Thunderstorms lash Sydney

07:29 am on 14 February 2010

Severe thunderstorms have swept across New South Wales, dumping a massive amount of rain in Sydney.

Weather forecasters say Sydney has been hit by the biggest rainfall in 10 years, with up to 88mm in just one hour in some areas, the ABC reports.

The State Emergency Service says crews had to rescue people from six cars stranded in floodwaters and assist others trapped in buildings.

The fire brigade responded to numerous calls about collapsed roofs, including a nightclub in Kings Cross, and parts of the central business district were left without power.
