Two injured in rally car crash

A rally car driver and his co-driver are in hospital after a serious crash during the Targa Rotorua event.

The crash happened near Lake Arapuni just before 8.30am on Sunday.

The driver was trapped in the car and had to be cut out by the Fire Service.

He sustained severe injuries to his lower legs and was taken to hospital by helicopter.

His co-driver was taken by road and is expected to be discharged soon.

The race continued and Motorsport New Zealand says it expects to know the cause of the crash by Tuesday.
