The Governor of Papua New Guinea's Madang province, former chief justice, Sir Arnold Amet, intends calling on a Philippines owned tuna cannery to fulfil its commitments to the people in the area.
Sir Arnold, who became Governor last year, has been touring parts of the province and meeting with people in the coastal village communities, who he says had expectations the arrival of the RD Cannery ten years ago would bring benefits.
He says people have lost land to the company and their resources are being exploited but an understanding with RD that it would offset the impact of this through the provision of social services has come to nothing.
"The people have some expectation that the companies would contribute to improvement in health services, make some contribution to their infrastructure such as road into the villages, such as contribution to the schools, such as water facilities and so on, and of course the principal landowners have some real expectation of some significant royalty benefits."
