Former PNG planning minister found guilty of corruption

A former Papua New Guinea planning minister and Pomio MP, Paul Tiensten, has been found guilty of misappropriating 3.6 million US dollars.

PNG Village reports Tiensten's conviction is the first successful result from the operation Task Force Sweep, set up to expose corruption.

The Deputy Chief Justice Gibbs Salika found Tiensten guilty for authorising a payment to Travel Air, an airline company, during Tiensten's tenure as the Minister for National Planning.

The head of Task Force Sweep, Sam Koim, says it was one of the first investigations after the task force was set up in 2011.

Tiensten had also faced trial last month over a 1.2 million US dollar payment to Tol Port Services Limited by the National Planning Department, but the judge deferred the decision to a date later this month.
