The prestigious award focuses on excellence in the Maori agri-business sector and switches between sheep and beef, and dairy farming in alternate years.

The dairy farming finalists this year are Ngai Tahu Farming with farms near Oxford in Canterbury, Tewi Trust with its farm just out of Tirau in south Waikato, and the proprietors of Rakaia Incorporation's Tahu a Tao farm near Ashburton.

Organisers said it was the first time in the competition's recent history two of the farms were from the South Island.

Each property will host a field day in March with the final winner announced in Hamilton on 20 May.
