Security has been beefed up around a managed isolation facility in Rotorua after a man, who had returned to New Zealand from Brisbane, got out of the hotel.

The man was reported missing from his room at 11pm and Defence Force staff found him around 11.30.

Officials say he didn't get far and believe the risk to the public is low. The person was taken to hospital for support and assessment.

RNZ reporter Andrew McRae spoke to Air Commodore Darryn Webb - head of managed isolation and quarantine, and began by asking him how the breach happened.
