NZ Rowing says it can do even better

The achievements of New Zealand's rowers at the Olympics are being hailed as an excellent platform from which to build an even stronger team in the future.

New Zealand rowers at the London Olympics won three gold medals and two bronze on the water at Eton Dorney.

The best tally by NZ rowers at an Olympics previously was three medals.

New Zealand Rowing high performance manager Alan Cotter told Morning Report that the podium finishes were the result of four years of solid teamwork.

But he says there were still three events for which New Zealand didn't qualify, so there is room for improvement.

"We've still got three boats that didn't qualify for the Olympics - the men's eight, the womens' eight, and the lightweight four - so if we can grow the programme and fill those boats, that's what we'll try to do," Cotter says.

"We have a sustainable programme going, but we want to build on it".

Cotter says the future is looking positive after the nation's under-23 team won 5 medals at their world championships three weeks ago.
