Payrise in pipeline for Samoa's civil servants

11:17 am on 14 January 2005

Wages for public servants in Samoa are set to rise, but a committee has yet to decide on the details.

Samoa's Deputy Prime Minister, Misa Telefoni, made the announcement on state television last night.

He says the government will hear recommendations by the committee by March, before the next budget in July.

The Opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, says he predicts the wage increase will happen before the next general elections in 2006.

But Le Mamea says wage increases are needed now because of the high cost of living, with inflation now standing at 14.6 per cent.
