American Samoa's chamber of commerce urges action on fiber optics

17:55 pm on 25 February 2008

The American Samoa Chamber of Commerce is calling on the House Budget and Appropriations Committee to speed up passage of a bill that would make funding available for the fiber optic project.

The aim of the legislation is to allow the release of three million US dollars out of a 20 million dollar loan from the government's Employees Retirement Fund.

The bill is held up in committee and a decision to report back to the House will be made after the Fono returns from its three-week recess on March the 10th.

The Chamber of Commerce President, David Robinson, said holding the bills in committee is of grave concern to the chamber.

He says he believes some lawmakers don't understand the importance of fibre optic cable technology and the value it will bring to the economy of American Samoa.

Mr Robinson wants the House to hear from businessman, John Newton, who is the local partner of the group that wants to

establish a call centre.
