Student dies after collapsing at Northland school

A girl has died after collapsing on campus in a Northland school on Monday.

Kamo Intermediate School year eight student Aimee Lindsay collapsed after an athletics event at the Whangarei school and was unable to be revived, the school said.

Police said they were called to attend Whāngarei Hospital at 5pm on Monday following the sudden death of the 13-year-old.

"Victim Support has been offered to the family and our thoughts are with them at this time. The matter will be referred to the Coroner," police said in a statement.

Kamo Intermediate School principal Kim Sloane said in a statement the tragedy would have a significant impact on students and staff.

"Our thoughts are with Aimee's family and friends at this very sad time," she said.

"We appreciate the support we have received from the Ministry of Education, other schools, and our school community."

School board chairperson Paul Cross said it was an an extremely tragic event.

"It's been felt amongst the students of the school, the staff and the wider community," he said. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends."
