The newly sworn in Papua New Guinea Minister of Communication and Information, Tim Masiu, says he wants improvements in public broadcasting and wants provincial governments to help.

Mr Masiu, who is the MP for South Bougainville, was one of several new additions to the James Marape cabinet on Friday.

He said he still needed to acquaint himself with the portfolio but said he wanted to see changes at the public broadcaster, NBC.

Mr Masiu, who began his working life as a broadcaster at the NBC, said radio was vital for informing and entertaining the people of PNG, but that it needed help.

"One of the things that I would like to do is try and share the costs with the provincial governments. There are some radio stations in the country and we need the provincial governments to partner us in making sure that radio broadcasting services are provided 24 hours for our people. We also have provinces that are disaster-prone. These provinces we must take care of them in terms of communication, in terms of radio service," he said.
