GM labelling laws will be defended, says Groser

The National Party's trade spokesperson says claims that New Zealand's genetic modification food labelling laws could be sacrificed in trade talks are scaremongering.

Tim Groser says his party will defend the labelling law, if re-elected.

The Sustainability Council and GE-Free New Zealand believe the United States will pressure New Zealand to scrap them in the TransPacific Partnership trade talks.

Mr Groser says the issue hasn't come up in the talks and he doesn't expect it to.

That's despite US trade officials in the past citing the labelling laws as a barrier to trade.
