Carbon tax repeal popular: poll

10:37 am on 25 November 2013

A majority of voters in Australia back repeal of Labor's carbon tax.

A Fairfax-Nielsen poll of 1400 voters shows 57% of people back repeal of the carbon tax. Only 16% want the carbon tax kept.

Prime Minister Abbott wants the Senate to vote on carbon tax repeal bills before Christmas.

AAP reports a repeal package cleared its first hurdle in the lower house last week, but the real battle to axe the tax begins in the Senate in early December.

Labor and the Australian Greens have vowed to block the laws in the Senate. They collectively hold the balance of power until the upper house changeover in July.
