Police seek man after shots fired

05:28 am on 10 October 2014

A man who sparked a manhunt yesterday is now in police custody.

John William Finnerty surrendered last night to staff at Te Aroha Police Station.

He had been sought since an incident during the day which apparently stemmed from a dispute between neighbours.

Shots were fired and streets in the Waikato town were cordoned off.

Officers of the Armed Offenders Squad surrounded a house and entered it after firing in tear-gas.

The house was empty when the officers went in, and a search began for Mr Finnerty.

His surrender was announced by police late last night.

He was expected to be interviewed by detectives overnight or this morning.
