Three Samoa MPs leave in HRPP split - report

14:45 pm on 24 February 2014

It's understood just three MPs have so far broken away from Samoa's ruling Human Rights Protection Party to form a new political party.

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the MP for the Siumu constituency, Tuu'u Anasi'i Leota, confirmed the new political party, saying he has been elected as its leader.

However, Autagavaia says the MP is reluctant to release any details on the break-away party, whose formation coincides with the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, being overseas.

He says this follows calls within the HRPP for the resignation of the Finance Minister, Faumuina Tiatia Liuga, over allegations of abuse of power and mismanagement.

"The Prime Minister in a media conference last week when I asked him, said that the decision has already been done. The caucus had voted for the minister to maintain in his cabinet, and there is no other decision. Now, last weekend and early this week, the member of parliament for Siumu constituency has confirmed that they are in the move to set up this political party."
