The bill aims to protect people who come forward with information on corruption.

It also covers people who report misconduct and maladministration.

Mr Hou said the bill's expected to contribute to the effectiveness of the proposed anti-corruption law which the prime minister is also seeking to have enacted.

Unlike its sister bill the Anti-Corruption Bill 2017 had already passed its first reading but stalled due to a lack of support in the house.

The legislation has proved politically divisive despite widespread public support.
