The metal monarch butterfly and Tui bird were put up around Christmas, and have been a talking point of the town.

Thames Coromandel District Council spokesperson Rebekah Duffin said everyone kept asking who had done it, so the council put a message out on social media sites to find the artist.

She said the artist, Stephen Ranger, came forward.

"This is his first sculpture, and he wanted to donate it to the community. It's made from all recycled materials. Mainly exhausts."

Ms Duffin said the council would work with Mr Ranger to maintain the sculpture.

Mr Ranger said he wanted to donate his sculpture to the community so everyone could enjoy it.
