The Earthquake Commission says it has received almost 4000 claims following Friday's earthquakes in Canterbury, and is expecting more to be lodged as people return from holidays.
The commission says after a similarly sized aftershock on 9 October, about 5000 claims were lodged.
Home owners with private insurance have three months to lodge a damage claim with the Earthquake Commission.
