The Productivity Commission will investigate how New Zealand's economy has coped with supply chain disruptions.

The inquiry was requested by the government.

It will look into what makes New Zealand's economy vulnerable to disruption in the context of increasing risks and the pandemic experience, as well as importer and exporter dependencies on global supply chains.

The commission will work with stakeholders and government agencies that are already looking into supply disruptions.

Minister of Finance Grant Robertson said the pandemic was a "considerable" shock to the global economy.

"While New Zealand's supply chains have shown resilience, there are still challenges," he said.

The commission will make recommendations on what policies and interventions could be introduced to make the economy and communities more resilient.

The commission will report back to the government by February 2024.
