Fiji seeks redress through Vienna Convention in PACER row

18:18 pm on 13 January 2010

Fiji says it will not be party to Part Two of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations, or PACER, amid its problems within the regional grouping, the Pacific Islands Forum.

Fiji was excluded from PACER-related events after it was suspended from the Forum last May for its interim regime reneging on a promise to relinquish power by holding elections.

The interim regime in Suva has issued a statement, saying it has exhausted means of redress under the PACER Agreement and is now seeking remedy from the Vienna Convention.

This calls for a suspension or termination of a treaty as a consequence of a breach.

Fiji says its role in PACER is separate from its position within the Forum.
