Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters has implored the American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to exempt New Zealand from tariffs on steel and aluminium.
The two spoke over the phone this morning, discussing a range of topics including the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding President Donald Trump's travel ban and the policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the US border.
Mr Peters was asked whether he raised steel tariffs with Mr Pompeo.
"Most definitely we did, and I was very encouraged with his comments, he saw our belief that we were wrongfully collateral damage."
Mr Peters said it was a very positive phone call and he expected to meet Mr Pompeo in person in Singapore in August.
