Wednesday's headlines: Lianne Dalziel MP set to declare her candidacy for mayoralty of Christchurch; Australians are big property buyers in New Zealand; North Otago residents are enjoying a lull between two storms to clean-up.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald is dominated by a headline which reads: "Aussies Snap Up Our Homes".

The paper says Australians are contributing to rocketing house prices, with new research showing they bought more property than any other overseas group.

Inside: dominance is given to the ferocious weather set to hit much of the country.

Waikato Times

A Hamilton man's efforts to save a person trapped in a burning house in the suburb of Claudelands leads The Waikato Times.

Matthew Kreymborg said he smashed the bottom of the door of the house but the fire was just too hot for him to enter the building.

Dominion Post

''Mayor's (light rail) dream runs off rails'' is the headline in The Dominion Post after it was priced at $940 million. Celia Wade-Brown has moved her support to a cheaper option of better bus services.

Also on the front page there is a story about New Zealand Post suspending deliveries to a Whitby house because its mailbox is considered a health and safety risk to posties.

The Press

The Press has pictures of Mayor Bob Parker and Lianne Dalziel MP under the headline: "Heavyweights fight for the city". The paper reports Ms Dalziel will on Wednesday end months of speculation by officially declaring her candidacy for the mayoralty against Mr Parker.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times has photographs of the devastation caused by the heavy rain and flooding over the past few days. Meanwhile, the residents of North Otago are enjoying a lull between the two storms to clean-up.

Also on the front page there is a story about concerns held by the principals of two high schools about a Facebook page which asks people to nominate a Dunedin high school "babe of the day".
